Somme Battlefield; WW1 Redan Ridge Serre Thiepval January 2010
In researching the forthcoming book 'Forever Young - the diaries of Joseph Willocks 23rd (1st Sportsman) Battalion Royal Fusiliers and James Buchan 2nd Gordon Highlanders' to be published 2013, I paid a visit to the Somme to where Lance Corporal Joseph Willocks was killed in action on 13th November 1916 and is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval. The weather very mixed, very cloudy and dark, then sunny all in the same day. The next day was dense fog just as the weather conditions were on 13 November 1916 at the start of the final Somme battle in 1916 .
The twenty year old's body was never found and his name is only one of over 73,000 names enscribed on the Thiepval Memorial, the largest War Memorial in the world. He left a diary of his time in the army and this will be published next year and not 2012 as planned as the book will now contain 2 diaries and letters from two brothers killed in action..
