Russian director Alexander Sokurov's German language film "Faust" has won the Golden Lion at this years Venice Film Festival.



The film follows Faust and a deranged Mephistopheles as they play out their destinies.



Hollywood film critic Deborah Young said of the film:

"Taking highbrow to the edge of slapstick, Sokurov's idiosyncratic adaptation of Faust will intrigue some and turn off others."
