Review (PS3 only as I cannot vouch for Xbox):
The device is the smallest game capture device available today to record PlayStation 3 consoles and Xbox 360 consoles. It can record in 1080p on PS3 and 1080p on Xbox 360. I really like how Elgato have included all of the cables that you will need to get started recording straight away and the software required to record is available for free download from
Setting up the device is very easy as is requires only connecting a few cables. It is important to reset display settings once you connect it to the Elgato and ensure that you carry out the steps I outline in the video.
The software is very easy to use and I must say the flashback feature included is an amazing thing, it takes up some space of your hard drive when it is working in the background and is deleted upon exit of the program. It is very easy to record and only includes setting up the folder that the video will save to, setting up the quality (I would recommend fairly high quality because, compared to Fraps, the file size is brilliant) and pressing the big, red button.
File sizes are around 7GB for a 1 hour recording session which is brilliant compared to Fraps which uses up roughly 70GB of storage space after 1 hour.
There are only two things I can think that are something to think about before buying this device, one, the device needs constant USB power if you want a display, as the display signal needs to pass through the device and it cannot achieve this without power, luckily though it does not need to be powered by any particular USB socket, so I plug it into the PS3 itself when not recording as it still gives it power. Another thing to consider is the price, in my opinion it is priced brilliantly, but not everyone will be able to afford it, so if you are serious about the quality of videos you put up and want something that is extremely easy and simple, the this is the perfect capture device for you.
